Popularity Dialer frees you from awkward situations

This service served as the inspiration for the Fake A Call app for the iPod touch / iPhone. Popularity Dialer allows you to premeditate a call to your phone at a given time to alleviate you from any awkward situation such as dinner with your mother in law. The calling service was promoted by David Pogue in December last year as one of the more interesting mobile phone services to date.

However, the site has been under watch by the FCC for rampant fake calling since you can always enter your friend’s number and have them get pranked. The damage isn’t really that - it’s more like cost. US carriers do charge for incoming calls so there are many ways for this service to rack up abuse. Since then, Popularity Dialer has issued a “Do Not Call Me” list that blocks your number from their servers.

Glofiish X610 boasts affordable Windows Mobile

Glofiish X610

The Glofiish X610 brings home the bacon when it comes to cheap. At (more or) less than USD $400.00, it is one of the cheapest Windows Mobile devices ever to be manufactured. In fact, it is even cheaper than the Verzio’s Windows Mobile device, the Envii when it first came out.

The X610 doesn’t support 3G connectivity, but it does house WiFi, a 2MP camera and 64MB of RAM (128MB flash ROM). It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1. The non-presence of 3G brings about mixed reactions from potential buyers depending on the region they are from. In some cases, not having 3G is a non-issue as WiFi can be more prevalent as a reliable connection option.

“… before the networks get congested.”

There’s a standing myth about telco networks. It’s the same with bandwidth and population density for Internet connection: the more congested the network is for the holidays (SMS greetings and the like), the worse the connection gets. Thus, results from holiday telco greetings (Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Happy New Year!) are evidently “problematic” to some extent when it hits Christmas or New Year’s eve.

Which is why a lot of people prefer to send their holiday greetings hours before midnight, “… before the networks get congested.”

Do you experience the same issues? I heard that congested networks are a myth. There’s always enough bandwidth, it’s just that someone’s stepping on the pipe. And this is the reality for most service providers. It seems a little unfair when you’re dealing with a “virtual commodity.”

But such is life. So before the networks get congested, here’s a happy greeting towards 2009 from me to you!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM CELLPHONE9!

Nokia cables saves family’s Christmas trek home

Nokia Cable

Here’s a pretty cool narration of how “Nokia strong” headphone jackets from a 7610 can work for a makeshift knot to tie the muffler back to the chassis of a car:

My son Henry had gotten a kite for Christmas, so I asked him if I could use the string. He was willing, but was understandably not too happy about the prospect. I cursed myself for not having any duct tape in the car — what kind of self-respecting man doesn’t carry duct tape with him at all times? My wife rifled through the glove compartment and held up a long wire and asked “what about this?” It was a wireline headphone jacket from around 2005 or so. I think I got it with my 7610. Perfect length, and built Nokia strong (source)

Way cool really. This happened to me once and I was able to use double sided tape to fix the exhaust before any real repairs could be made.

Nokia looking for “Legends” Urban Myths for PR Campaign

Nokia Legends

Happy holidays from Cellphone9! It’s an hour past midnight and I just finished a late Christmas dinner with the family. Here’s a quick tip from the Nokia guys running the Legends PR Campaign.

The Legends idea was sparked by the need to tell stories about the innovation going on inside Nokia. Now, we all know at least one urban legend, a fascinating and intriguing tale which we suspect may not be true. In this case, unlike many urban legends, the Legends are very real.

You’ve probably watched some of the stories on the Legends website, but now it’s possible for you to create your own unbelievable story based on mobile technology. I’m sure you could come up with quite a few!

And what’s in it for you then? The winner gets his/her story published at the Legends website in March 2009. The winner also gets an awesome Nokia device as a prize!

Check out the site and click on “publish a legend” to join this competition!

Call your relatives for the holidays with Gizmo Call

Gizmo Call

Hey geeks, it’s the holidays and I’m quite sure that I can’t wrench you out of your computers to go call your relatives. In its stead, I’m recommending Skype, Gizmo Project or this neat service called Gizmo Call, a browser based VoIP service that allows you to call any phone straight from your browser.

Who can I call?
You can call any other GizmoCall, Gizmo5 users, 800 numbers, or SIP address for no charge. Here’s a guide to free calls you can make. To call a traditional phone number and take advantage of some of the low rates on the net you will need to buy $10 of call-out credit here.

Can GizmoCall receive calls?
You can receive calls using GizmoCall. Simply login and then any other GizmoCall user can call you at that username. As long as GizmoCall is open in any window or browser tab (even if in the background) you will be able to receive a call.

How can I make sure my speaker and microphone are working?
Click the “Test” icon below the numeric keypad and follow the instructions. Then use the microphone and speaker sliders to set the optimum settings.

Why not give it a try, and call your folks now?

Differences between the Nokia E71 and E63

Aside from the more or less $100 price difference, here are some other differences between the Nokia E63 and the Nokia E71. Both of these phones are very similar in features and look but there are some differences worth noting in making some informed buying decisions:

1. The E63 comes with a flashlight button option. Hold a button down, and the flash LED light comes on. The E71 doesn’t have this feature.

2. While the E71 is locked, pressing the center button will show a quick time check.

3. The E63’s spacebar is significantly smaller than the E71’s spacebar in the thumb board.

4. The E71 can support HSDPA. The E63 only supports 3G. Choosing either is a matter of preference in browsing style plus in several countries, the difference between HSDPA and 3G is barely noticeable.

5. The E71 comes with a 3.2MP camera while the E63 comes with a 2.0MP camera. Barely any difference here.

6. There are less buttons on the side for the E63. For instancem volume control is easier to adjust on the E71 because of the buttons on the side.

7. The E71 does not have a 3.5mm jack. The E63 has one.
